CLASSROOM RULES AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year to help him/her achieve his/her highest potential. The following is some information that will hopefully answer many of your questions regarding my classroom policies.
What are we doing in class?:
*We will start our school year learning several things on the computer. I
plan to incorporate the best of all schooling into our classroom.
*We will work in small groups, you will work independently, we will work as a class, and you will work on your Chromebooks. The first few weeks of school, we will really get to know our Chromebooks, passwords, computer programs, and each other.
*So, put your seatbelts on--it’s going to be a ride!
Parties:
*Parents are welcome to send in a birthday treat with their student, but we just ask that it is enough for all students.
*Please try to send in what may be needed to pass out the treat you are sending as napkins or silverware (if needed) are often forgotten! :)
*Treats should be brought by the student or dropped off at the main entrance by a parent/guardian.
Homework:
*Please note that I rarely give homework, but I expect that each student will be studying for their spelling words (as assigned) and read their AR book 20 minutes a night at least 5 days a week. I also expect that if I send home a study guide for a test, they will be studying. (Often times, I give a digital option for Social Studies/Science testing to make it more fun!)
*I do not really consider that "homework" but instead "daily/weekly responsibilities" that they must do to be successful in 5th grade.
Class Tag:
*We will continue to utilize ClassTag for communication purposes with
parents.
*This is such an important thing to get connected to in order to know what
is going in, so please connect right away to our class using the enclosed
paper. Please reach out if you are unfamiliar with the site, I would be
happy to help!
*I hope to share pictures with parents on the first day of school as you will
not be able to walk your child in.
Scholastic Book Orders: *Our Class Code is P44ZQ!
Your child will be bringing home book orders about once a month. If you wish to order, simply fill out the form and send a check made payable to Scholastic Book Club in an envelope with your child’s name on it. You also can order books online from book club using your debit or credit card very easily. If you need help navigating that site please let me know! These orders are provided as a convenient way for parents to buy quality books for their child at a low price. As an added bonus, for every dollar that is spent on books, our classroom earns bonus points which are used to purchase books for our classroom
library. This is a win-win situation because you get quality literature at a low price and you are helping to provide quality literature for our classroom. Of course, you are never under any obligation to order.
Birthdays
Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he/she may
bring treats for the class on his/her birthday. Please send a note a few days in advance, so I can set aside some class time for the party. Summer birthdays can be celebrated at anytime during the school year. Please let me know the date of your choice, so that it doesn’t conflict with any other birthdays.
Healthy snack/Water bottle
Your child is encouraged to bring a healthy snack and water bottle each day. Healthy snacks could include: fruits, veggies, cheese, crackers, trail mix, popcorn, etc. There may be times when we are working and snacking, so finger foods are the easiest. If the snack requires a spoon, fork, etc. please send that in too. I do sometimes have extras from other students who don't want part of their unopened breakfast/lunch, but we tend to run out quickly :)
If you are able to donate snacks to the class for a day when kids forget that would be so appreciated! It's hard to work/think when little tummies are rumbling.
Your child will be allowed to have a water bottle at their seats as well.
*****I have a very strict PLAIN WATER ONLY rule in my classroom for many reasons!**** This means that no pop, juice (other than during snack), flavored water, powerade/gatorade, etc should be in their water bottle.
School Attendance
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. Many of our activities are group oriented and will require the use of classroom materials. Therefore, it may be difficult to make up work at home. Please view school as a priority. If your child is ill or there is an emergency, please keep him/her at home. If you know your child will be absent, please notify the office by calling.
Changes in Transportation
If you plan to pick up a child who normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you MUST send a written note. Do not rely on your child to tell me this information. If a written note is not received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. This is the school’s policy for your child’s safety.
Outdoor Recess
The children will be going out for recess everyday, unless it is raining or 10 degrees or below. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothing for the day. A jacket is expected for weather cooler than 60 degrees.
